UG Optional Course
This course will look at the work of Romantic visual artists, primarily William Blake, Henry Fuseli and Caspar David Friedrich, with sidelights on minor artsts of the time. It will trace the influences of drama, myth, landscape and the picturesque on Romantic visual languages, visit the Gothic and take a tour of the symbolic registers of magic and spiritualism to get a feel of how artists of the time articulated the immaterial in visula media. It will also look at the Preraphaelites as a continuation of the Romantic tradition in the nineteenth century. Readings will include Lessing and John Berger.
